FILM STANDARDS

Logistical Rules:

- All crew and team members for each film must be NCFCA Affiliate students for the 2013-2014 season. (If you are new to NCFCA, go here to find out how to sign up for an account and affiliate.) Actors and participants in the video may be any willing persons of any age.

- Total runtime must be eight (8) minutes or less (including credits) per entry.

- All entries become the property of NCFCA.

- NCFCA shall have full rights to use, display, or show in whole or in part any submitted film. Students are responsible for securing necessary licensing rights to any copyrighted material incorporated into the film, and for making proof of those rights available to NCFCA. To avoid the difficulty of securing such rights, NCFCA recommends using only original or non-copyrighted material such as material licensed under Creative Commons or similar licenses.

- To ensure that the winning film will project well onto a large screen at the National Championship, all submitted films should have a resolution of at least 480x640. The higher the resolution of the film, the better it will look on a large screen.

- Students may use any tools to create their films, as long as they comply with the submission rules.

Content Rules:

- All entries must be the original work of the entrant(s).

- While all submissions should adhere to the assigned theme, creativity in both style and topic is encouraged. The judging panel should be able to clearly understand the connection between the assigned theme and the submitted film.

- Students must properly credit sources for any outside material (e.g. music) incorporated into the film.

- Short film submissions may be of any style or genre (e.g. action, adventure, comedy, drama, animation, or documentary).

JUDGING

- All submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges appointed by the NCFCA Board of Directors. The judges will select the top six films, which will then be sent to the NCFCA Board of Directors for evaluation.

- The NCFCA Board of Directors will select three Finalists from the top six films, and will award to those three films first, second, and third place.

- Finalists will be notified by email, and then announced via the NCFCA website.

SUBMISSION RULES

- The entry fee is $25.00 per film, per director.

- Entry deadline for all submissions: November 1, 2013, 11:59 PM Central Time.

  • No submissions will be accepted for any reason after the deadline. Because of the often-large file size associated with films and the time required to upload large video files to video-sharing websites, NCFCA recommends submitting films as early as possible before the deadline.

- All films must be uploaded to a video-sharing site such as YouTube or Vimeo. Students may choose to make their films private or unlisted, as long as NCFCA officials may view the film through the link provided by the student on the Short Film Submission Form.

- Students may enter multiple films, but each film must be accompanied by its own entry form and entry fee.
